Uncertainty quantification in flooding prevention project
As part of the EXAR project, uncertainty quantification techniques were used to gain insights into the effects uncertainties have on the hydrological model predictions. This is one of the first mentions of UQ in a federal office report in Switzerland.
UQLab v.1.4 now available
The new version of UQLab was published today. This new release includes the new active learning reliability (ALR) module, a modular framework to easily build custom active learning solution schemes and the high-performance computing (HPC) dispatcher module, a user-friendly interface to connect UQLab to HPC resources.

UQLab 2500th user
Maxime Fays, a master’s student in Modelling, Scientific Computing and Image Analysis at the Université Grenoble Alpes (France), is the 2500th user of UQLab since the first public release in July 2015. Maxime currently uses UQLab as a support to a course related to rare event simulation. As a future PhD student in computational biomechanics applied to biomedical stents, he considers using UQLab’s comprehensive surrogate modelling modules.

UQLab 2000th user
Prof. Wouter Huberts (Maastricht University Medical Center, The Netherlands) registered as UQLab’s 2000th user since the first public release in July 2015. Prof. Huberts and his team plan to develop and apply physics-based patient-specific models to support clinical diagnosis and intervention planning. They will more specifically use the sensitivity analysis and Bayesian calibration modules of UQLab.

Bruno Sudret teaches at the Zurich Summer School on Uncertainty Quantification for PDEs. Two courses on non-intrusive sparse polynomial chaos expansions, rare event simulation in UQ and sensitivity analysis are proposed, as well as an introduction to UQLab, the ETH platform for uncertainty quantification.

SAMOS project
The SAMOS project subsidized by the Swiss National Science Foundation officially starts. The project aims at developing surrogate models for stochastic simulators, a class of engineering-oriented computational models whose output is a probability distribution (as opposed to deterministic simulators).

- July 24th, 2014. Bruno Sudret and Chu Van Mai published a paper entitled "Computing derivative-based global sensitivity measures using polynomial chaos expansions" in the journal Reliability Engineering & System Safety.
- July 2014, 2014. The Journal of Structural Safety published a special issue in honor of Professor Wilson H. Tang (Ed.: K.K Phoon) who passed away in January 2012. Prof. Tang was one of the pioneers of structural reliability analysis. He was famous in the field due to his textbook "Probability Concepts in Engineering" co-authored with Prof. A. Ang.
Bruno Sudret contributed a paper on "Meta-model-based importance sampling for reliability sensitivity analysis" with Dr. V. Dubourg.
- July 13th-16th, 2014. The Chair participated in the 2nd Int. Conference on Vulnerability and Risk Analysis and Management (ICVRAM2014) / 6th Int. Symposium on Uncertainty Modelling and Analysis in Liverpool (UK). Three papers were presented by Katerina Konakli ("Value of Information Analysis in Structural Safety"), Stefano Marelli ("UQLab: a framework for uncertainty quantification in MATLAB") and Joseph Nagel ("A Bayesian multilevel approach to optimally estimate material properties").
- July 3rd-7th, 2014. The Chair participated in the 17th Conference of the IFIP Working Group 7.5 on Reliability and Optimization of Structural Systems (external page IFIP 2014) in Huangshan (China). Roland Schöbi presented a paper entitled "PC-Kriging: A new meta-modelling method and its applications to quantile estimation". Moustapha Maliki, a Chair visiting student from the French Institute of Advanced Mechanics, presented a paper entitled "Reliability-based design optimization of automotive body structures under crashworthiness constraints".

Roland Schöbi presented a paper on "PC-Kriging: A new metamodelling method combining Polynomial Chaos Expansions and Kriging" at the Uncertainties 2014 conference in Rouen, France. Moustapha Maliki, a visiting PhD student of the Chair, presented a paper entitled "Metamodeling for crashworthiness design: a comparative study of Kriging and support vector

- June 24th, 2014. The Chair receives the visit of three researchers from the French National Research Institute on Environmental and Agricultural Sciences (IRSTEA). These guests work on rockfall and avalanche protection at IRSTEA Grenoble and develop tools for risk analysis against natural hazards. They got the first organized training on the beta version of UQLab, the Chair's software for uncertainty quantification.
- June 6th, 2014. Bruno Sudret gave a seminar on "Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification in Engineering" at EAWAG, the Swiss Federal Research Center on Water Resources.
- April 23-25, 2014. The Chair organizes the 2014 annual workshop of external page Mascot-Num, a network of academics and industrial partners dedicated to the development of stochastic methods for the analysis of computer simulations.

This PhD was prepared under the supervision of Prof. Bruno Sudret (2009-2012) at the Université Blaise Pascal in Clermont-Ferrand (France) with the collaboration of Phimeca Engineering.
- October 26th, 2012. Bruno Sudret gave a lecture entitled “Download Rare events simulation: classical engineering methods and current trends using meta-models (PDF, 7.9 MB)” at the JSTAR’2012 workshop (external page Journées de Statistique de Rennes). This yearly workshop is organized in Rennes (France) by the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA).
- October 11th, 2012. Dr Hung Xuan DANG has completed his PhD entitled "Identification de la variabilité spatiale des champs de contraintes dans les agrégats polycristallins et application à l’approche locale de la rupture" (Modelling the random spatial variability of stress fields in polycrystalline aggregates – Application to the local approach to fracture mechanics). This PhD was prepared under the supervision of Prof. Bruno Sudret (2009-2012) at the Université Blaise Pascal in Clermont-Ferrand (France) with the collaboration of Phimeca Engineering and EDF R&D, Dpt of Materials and Components.
