The sixth network-wide event (NWE) of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) GREYDIENT took successfully place in Munich from November 7th to 10th, 2023. The event was organized through the collaborative efforts of the Technical University of Munich and BMW.

Today, Nora Lüthen successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Sparse spectral surrogate models for deterministic and stochastic computer simulations”.

Xujia Zhu, a PhD student of our group in his final year, received the Best Paper Award awarded at the 8th International Symposium on Reliability Engineering and Risk Management (ISRERM’22), which took place at the Leibniz University Hannover (Germany) on September 4-7, 2022.

Paul-Remo Wagner was awarded the ETH medal for his PhD thesis on “Stochastic Spectral Embedding in Forward and Inverse Uncertainty Quantification”. 

In collaboration with T. Zhou and Y. Peng from Tongji University, B. Sudret and S. Marelli published a new paper on a novel adaptive approach for the probability density evolution method for reliability analysis.

In collaboration with G. A. Meles and N. Linde from the University of Lausanne, S. Marelli published a new paper on the combination of dimensionality reduction and surrogate modelling for geophysical tomographic imaging.

We hosted the second network-wide event of GREYDIENT in April 19-22.

On Nov 16, 2021, Nora Lüthen gave a three-hour lecture on simulation-based risk analysis as a part of the CAS "Risikoanalytik und Risiko-Assessment" of the ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften.

We are proud to announce the beta launch of UQ[Py]lab, a python, cloud-based version of UQLab that brings a full UQLab experience to any python environment.

The EMI/PMC 2021 conference will be hosted by Columbia University from May 25th to 28th, 2021.

A paper about sparse polynomial chaos expansions by N. Lüthen, S. Marelli and B. Sudret has recently been published in the SIAM/ASA Journal of Uncertainty Quantification.

We have an open project-based position for the development of a teaching web platform and a set of interactive applications related to the civil engineering Bachelor course “Structural Mechanics”.

Nora received the award for her poster on “Sparse regression-based Poincaré expansions for global sensitivity analysis”, which she presented at this year’s virtual edition of the annual MASCOT-NUM 2021 meeting.

The PhD position is funded by CNRS (via the MODCOV19 platform) and is scheduled to start on October 1st, 2021. The PhD student will be registered in the MSTII doctoral school and she/he will be attached to AIRSEA project/team at Jean Kuntzmann Lab (UMR 5224) in Grenoble (France).

The MASCOT NUM 2021 meeting focuses this year on statistical analysis and uncertainty quantification of complex numerical models for natural world. It will take place from April 27th to 30th, 2021.

Two papers about the work on Stochastic Spectral Embedding (SSE) by P.-R. Wagner, S. Marelli, C. Lataniotis and B. Sudret have been recently published. 

As part of the EXAR project, uncertainty quantification techniques were used to gain insights into the effects uncertainties have on the hydrological model predictions. This is one of the first mentions of UQ in a federal office report in Switzerland.

The new version of UQLab was published today. This new release includes the new active learning reliability (ALR) module, a modular framework to easily build custom active learning solution schemes and the high-performance computing (HPC) dispatcher module, a user-friendly interface to connect UQLab to HPC resources.

The Chair opens a Ph.D. position in the field of advanced simulation methods for offshore wind turbine design in the context of the European Project HIPERWIND.

The Chair received an Innovedum grant to develop a web-based platform hosting educational apps for the two Structural mechanics courses.

The kick-off meeting of the Horizon 2020 European project HIPERWIND devoted to the next-generation design of offshore wind turbine farms has taken place online on December 8 and 9, 2020.

Biswarup will work as a post-​doctoral researcher with the main interest to develop surrogate modeling frameworks for mixed discrete-​continuous random variables.

Abdulrauf Khetrish, a master's student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) is the 3,000th registered user of UQLab since the first public release in July 2015.

The project HIPERWIND (Highly advanced probabilistic design and enhanced reliability methods for high-value, cost-efficient offshore wind) has been approved by the European Commission end of July 2020.

The IFIP WG 7.5 2020 conference will be hosted by Kyoto University from August 23rd to 26th.

M. Moustapha co-​authored a new paper proposing a methodology for the identification of robust strategies in building renovations. The paper is a result from a collaboration with the Chair of Sustainable Construction at ETH Zurich, the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland and the Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

S. Marelli co-authored a new paper comparing options for a European renewable energy supply grid. The paper is a result from a collaboration with IAAS Potsdam and the Climate Policy Group in ETH.

A former visiting scholar of the Chair (H. M. Kroetz) recently published a paper in collaboration with M. Moustapha, A.T. Beck and B. Sudret on reliability-based optimization problems in a life-cycle cost setting.

X. Zhu and B. Sudret published a new paper on emulating stochastic simulator responses with generalized lambda distributions.

A paper co-authored by S. Marelli and B. Sudret was recently published on MSSP, as a result of a collaboration with the University of Aarhus (G. Abbiati) and the ETH Chair of Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (B. Stojadinovic and N. Tsokanas).

Two papers resulting from a collaboration of the Chair with Télécom Paris (Dr. J. Wiart) and Université Paris-Saclay (Prof. D. Lesselier) have been recently published.

The GREYDIENT Innovative Training Network (ITN) on grey-box modelling and applications to reliable design and monitoring of complex systems has been approved. 

B. Sudret is co-author of a paper on the probability density evolution method applied to uncertainty quantification of non linear structures, in collaboration with Tongji University in Shanghai (China).

B. Sudret is co-author of a paper on estimating the surrogate model uncertainty in wind turbine reliability assessment, in collaboration with the University of Aalborg (Danemark) and the wind turbine company EMD International.

Members of our Chair authored two of the five papers published in the Volume 10, Issue 1 (2020) of the International Journal for Uncertainty Quantification.

M. Moustapha presented the strategy adopted by our Chair for the solution of the black-box reliability challenge alongside other participants.  He also introduced an upcoming UQLab module for active learning reliability.

The paper Polynomial-chaos-based kriging by Schöbi et al. is the most downloaded paper in the International Journal for Uncertainty Quantification. 

Maxime Fays, a master’s student in Modelling, Scientific Computing and Image Analysis at the Université Grenoble Alpes (France), is the 2500^th user of UQLab since the first public release in July 2015. Maxime currently uses UQLab as a support to a course related to rare event simulation. As a future PhD student in computational biomechanics applied to biomedical stents, he considers using UQLab’s comprehensive surrogate modelling modules.

The chair recently participated in the TNO black-box challenge, a challenge where participants are invited to test their own methods for the solution of truly black box structural reliability problems.

B. Sudret and J. Nagel published a paper combining surrogate models (principal component analysis and polynomial chaos expansions), sensitivity analysis and Bayesian model calibration in the field of urban drainage simulation.

Christos Lataniotis successfully defended his PhD thesis on "Data-driven uncertainty quantification for high-dimensional engineering problems". 

Xujia Zhu receives the SIAM Student Travel Award to attend the 2020 SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification (UQ2020). This award corresponds to a complimentary registration to the conference and the reimbursement of the travel costs.

The 9th International Conference on Sensitivity Analysis of Model Output will be held in Barcelona between October 28-30, 2019.

The new version v.1.3 of UQLab was published on September 19, 2019. This new release greatly improves the existing input module and adds a new module dedicated to reliability based design optimization (RBDO).

A workshop titled Vine copulas and their applications will take place at TU Munich from July 8th and 9th. Emiliano Torre will give a talk about Vine copulas for uncertainty quantification: why and how?

The 3rd International Conference on Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Sciences and Engineering will be held in Hersonissos (Crete Island, Greece) on June 24-26, 2019.

Xujia Zhu received the 2019 CERRA student recognition award for his paper titled Surrogating the response PDF of stochastic simulators using generalized lambda distributions at the 13^th International Conference on Applications of Statistics and Probability in Civil Engineering in Seoul, Korea.

Prof. Wouter Huberts (Maastricht University Medical Center, The Netherlands) registered as UQLab’s 2000^th user since the first public release in July 2015. Prof. Huberts and his team plan to develop and apply physics-based patient-specific models to support clinical diagnosis and intervention planning. They will more specifically use the sensitivity analysis and Bayesian calibration modules of UQLab.

The 13th International Conference on Applications of Statistics and Probability in Civil Engineering will be held at Seoul National University (South Korea) between May 26-30, 2019. The Chair organizes a mini-symposium on “Surrogate Models for Uncertainty Quantification, Reliability and Sensitivity Analysis” together with Profs. J.-M. Bourinet (France), S. Mahadevan and A. Taflanidis (USA).

The SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering will take place in Spokane, Washington between February 25 - March 1, 2019.

The new version v1.2 of UQLab was published on February 22, 2019. This new release includes a whole new Bayesian module, support for sensitivity analysis with dependent inputs and performance improvements across the board.

The 90th annual meeting of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanis will take place from Februrary 18-22, 2019 in Vienna, Austria.

The chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification has an open post-doc position.

Florian Schmid received the 3rd Hatt-Bucher Prize for his master thesis written at the chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification. 

Two students graduated from the civil engineering Master's program after writing their Master thesis at the chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification.

Bruno Sudret teaches at the Zurich Summer School on Uncertainty Quantification for PDEs. Two courses on non-intrusive sparse polynomial chaos expansions, rare event simulation in UQ and sensitivity analysis are proposed, as well as an introduction to UQLab, the ETH platform for uncertainty quantification.

Reda Snaiki  (State University of New York at Buffalo) registered as UQLab’s 1500th user since the first public release on July 1st, 2015. He plans to use UQLab to predict urban flooding in real-time by using surrogate models.  

Prof. Bruno Sudret and Prof. Sankaran Mahadevan (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, USA) have been invited to coordinate a special issue of the journal of Reliability Engineering and System Safety as guest editors.

The new version v1.1 of UQLab was published on July 5, 2018. This new release contains new metamodelling tools (support vector machines for classification and regression) and UQLink, a universal wrapper that allow a seamless connection of third-party software to UQLab.

Bruno Sudret gives a talk entitled “Surrogate modelling for uncertainty quantification in engineering applications” at the seminar of the MATHICSE Group (Mathematics in Computational Science and Engineering) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

The SAMOS project subsidized by the Swiss National Science Foundation officially starts. The project aims at developing surrogate models for stochastic simulators, a class of engineering-oriented computational models whose output is a probability distribution (as opposed to deterministic simulators).

Joseph B. Nagel received the Swisscomas 2018 prize for his PhD thesis written at the chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification.

Maliki Moustapha received his PhD on “Adaptive surrogate models for the reliable lightweight design of automotive body structures” from the Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand (France) on January 27, 2016. Prof. Bruno Sudret was co-supervisor of this research.
